This is a discussion not to be missed. Ashley Yost and Mali Jane (the founders of AM Yoga in Grand Rapids, MI) along with Yoga instructor and Professional Counselor Margie Muñoz LLPC speak with Paul Krauss MA LPC about all things yoga. Along with the discussion about the intersection of the physical and mental health benefits yoga offers, the panel agrees that "Yoga just feels good." Such a statement sounds so simple, but what if your life actually "felt good"? In the hustle and bustle and confusion of the current times where many people spend 10+ hours a day hunched over a desk or sitting while entertaining themselves on various "screens" many complain of chronic stress, body pain, and lack of meaning. What if the ancient art of yoga could provide relief, purpose, community, and physical and mental strength? For many, it does just that. According to the three yoga instructors interviewed on the podcast: The proof is in the practice. Going further, therapist Margie Muñoz adds her expertise about mental health, and how yoga can help with multiple areas of prevention as well as serving to enhance the counseling/therapy process.
Ashley and Mail have been creating a health community using the art and science of yoga and meditation. They aim to provide people with an opportunity to practice yoga daily via the 365 Program at AM YOGA. Their mission: Bringing yoga to all people. AM YOGA is igniting people with the power of I AM. AM Yoga uses these three elements (sadhana, satusung, and seva) to experience a state of I AM. It is what we teach, practice daily, and are committed to sharing with the world. Learn more about AM YOGA here.

Paul Krauss MA LPC speaks with Peter Whitehouse, MD-PhD and Daniel George, PhD MSc about their new book "American Dementia: Brain Health in an Unhealthy Society." This is a conversation you are not going to want to miss. Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. George are two experts coming together to make a well-researched and passionate argument about rethinking brain health and the current healthcare system through an "eco-psychosocial lens." From examining Alzheimer’s as NOT a single disease (such as Polio) but a complex, heterogenous condition based on multiple studies, to examining the pharmaceutical industry's role in shaping the narrative about the syndrome--Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. George flex their substantial knowledge base in critically examining the American view on Dementia from multiple medical, scientific, and social lenses. Further, Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. George discuss how the misunderstanding of Alzheimer's has mostly locked in efforts to treat it to a single pill, instead of reflecting on the research into the strides made in the healthcare industry with Person Centered Care, Life-Long education, Age-Friendly Communities, and basic preventative measures that communities may implement as ways to prevent and help those suffering from Alzheimer's. The conversation runs from the micro (the disease and what the research has demonstrated) to the macro (the broader implications of our current society and how it functions).
Previously, the two contributed to the book: The Myth of Alzheimer's: What You Aren't Being Told About Today's Most Dreaded Diagnosis.
- Daniel R. George, PhD, MSc, is a medical anthropologist and an associate professor in the Department of Humanities and the Department of Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine.
- Peter J. Whitehouse, MD, PhD, is a professor of neurology at Case Western Reserve University and a professor of medicine at University of Toronto. He is cofounder of Intergenerational Schools, a network of unique public, multi-age community schools in Cleveland, Ohio.

![Understanding Human Behavior, Culture, and Everything through an Emergent System Lens: Consilience with Tom Beakbane [Episode 69]](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/1760630/NEWIntentionalClinicianSIZED_ysz3uj_300x300.jpg)

This is an episode that is not to be missed. Tom Beakbane and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss his new book How to Understand Everything: Consilience: A New Way to See the World. Tom and Paul discuss many topics including the hard science of how the body and mind interact, tribalism, culture, human behavior, communication and much more. Tom's journey to resurrect the concept of consilience began when he tried to understand why textbook explanations of human behavior did not account for the techniques routinely used by marketing communications and political operatives. Also he observed that textbook psychology did not explain the interpersonal dynamics he observed while providing services to his company’s clients. He realized that by weaving together developments on the front lines of biology, physics and computing and re-conceptualizing human behavior as an emergent system it was possible to explain the nature of understanding in ways that are all-embracing.
Tom Beakbane is president of a brand marketing company in Toronto, Canada. With an honors degree in biochemistry and neurophysiology from Durham University in England, he was puzzled by the gap between textbook theories of human behavior and his experiences creating business communications. He closed the gap by tapping into developments at the frontiers of science, explained in the just-published book How to Understand Everything. Consilience: A New Way to See the World.

A curious thing about many regular counseling and social work programs--there isn't much time spent about how to treat substance use disorder. Even though in the USA, 2020 was the deadliest year on record for drug use related deaths! Now there are entire programs in graduate schools where substance use disorder and treatments are the focus, but for your average therapist practicing psychotherapy--they may not have the knowledge about how the drugs interact w/ mental health, empirically-proven treatments, and the drugs themselves to feel confident in helping someone struggling with any type of substance use disorder.
In this episode, Paul Krauss MA LPC and Betsy Byler, MA LPC discuss her work in helping to educate therapists about the treatments available, the substances themselves, and best practices so that they can better serve the communities they practice in.
Betsy Byler, MA, LPC-SAS, ICS, LPCC is a mental health therapist, substance abuse counselor and clinical supervisor. After serving as the director of an agency she moved into private practice in 2019 and continued seeing clients for treatment of trauma and substance abuse. In the fall of 2020 she launched a podcast called All Things Substance aimed at helping therapists gain the information they need to add substance use to their scope of practice.

Have you ever heard of people that are paid to contemplate the future? It's true! They exist. They are called Futurists. They even have their own training and schools they attend. And no, they are not psychics. They utilize analysis of big data, trends, and other mental exercises to predict multiple models of possible futures--which can be useful to everyday humans as well as companies and governments. Paul Krauss MA LPC invited Sylvia Gallusser onto the Intentional Clinician podcast to tell us all about what a Futurist is (and isn't), as well as how future-thinking exercises could influence our Psychology and how it is related to Philosophy. Together, we also discuss why futurist thinking is needed more now, than ever. Find out why!
Discussed: What a futurist is not, answering the critics of futurism, psychology, psychology and futurism, futurist exercises, future thinking in mental health & psychology, signal scanning, "future back", how futurist principles are aligned with philosophy, time, ideologies, foresight, ethics, limitations in our ability to contemplate the future related to brain structure, mental exercises to stretch our time horizon, future thinking as related to therapeutic tools, as well as examples of futurism in action and applied to projects. And much much more.

![The Relationship between Trauma and Chronic Pain with Brandon Yuenger [Episode 63]](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/1760630/NEWIntentionalClinicianSIZED_ysz3uj_300x300.jpg)

What is the link between trauma and chronic pain? How is physical therapy related to the field of psychology and mental health? How do you help someone settle their nervous system? Could you teach someone physical therapy techniques virtually? Could you teach someone to start "self-healing" their body? And what discoveries have some physical therapists made regarding people's experience with trauma and pain in the body?
Paul Krauss MA LPC and Dr. Brandon Yuenger discuss all of these concepts and more in this episode of the Intentional Clinician podcast.
Brandon Yuenger has started his own coaching business called Step Forward Wellness and he also works as a physical therapist in Grand Rapids, MI.
In 2012, Dr. Brandon Yuenger graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Shortly thereafter while working with a local rehab hospital to rehabilitate pediatric chronic pain and head injuries, he developed a taste for neurologically based manual therapies and found excellent results with both children and adults alike. From there, Dr. Yuenger entered the complicated world of chronic pain. Using a combination of mentoring, intuition and dumb luck he has developed a system of rehabilitation that is based in the understanding that we as people are not a collection of individual parts but one integrated unit of being. He is excited to share his passion through both practice and education.
