“I deal with color on an intuitive level. I pick colors in the moment with a digital pallet of infinite color choices. My tools lend to an “in the moment” flow. With digital art I will have a color appear in my head first and then I add it to the design. I often combine unusual colors that create a distinct vibration and energy to the design. The same is true for my mixed media work. My studio has paint tubes scattered all over my work space. The piece I'm working on will in a way “call” to the color that needs to be added next.”

A Lifetime at the Piano [Episode 22]
Sunday Dec 23, 2018
Sunday Dec 23, 2018
This episode tells a personal story of my grandfather Wally Krauss’ life at the piano. I am helped by my father, brother, and some home recordings. My grandfather was an amateur pianist and organist who for 80 years shared his gift and talent with family, his many friends in various social circles, church groups, senior homes, and restaurants. My grandfather played piano daily into his 95th year of life. This episode will feature home recordings of his playing and storytelling. Also, my father describes growing up with such a musical father, and discusses research results which show that playing the piano influences brain development and plasticity for both children and elderly. Regarding psychology, we will also discuss how a positive attitude and outlook on life can influence your overall well-being. I also talk to my brother about grandfather’s influence on his life and how we are working to carry the torch of creating and playing music as part of our family heritage. I hope you enjoy it. This is the second episode in a series about music. The first episode was my interview with musician Kelley Stolz (episode 17).
Concepts Discussed: Immigrating to the USA from Germany, Learning English, A Positive Attitude, Practicing, Piano Playing, Brain Plasticity, The Elderly Staying Active, Youtube, Reddit, Bandcamp, Storytelling, Family Culture, etc.

Saturday Nov 17, 2018
Saturday Nov 17, 2018
Welcome to Part Two: Reflections on Ten years of Providing Psychotherapy by Paul Krauss MA LPC. Subtitle: Reflections on my experiences with different modalities of therapy and their implications.
I would posit that this is my most focused summary of my experience in the field of counseling psychology. I also discuss how the current state of counseling connects to the current cultural and economic situation that we find ourselves in. I begin with a large overview of the field of counseling, and then systematically move through different modalities of psychotherapy and counseling practices; eventually waxing poetic on the human condition and discussing methods to seek deep meaning in life. This episode is as much for clinicians (counselors or therapists) as it is for anyone interested in the fields of psychology or philosophy.
Discussed in this Episode: Symptom reduction versus healing, the dominant medical model versus creativity, the influence of third party payers and money on counseling treatment, empirically validated treatments, managed care, how the economy and stress affects levels of empathy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, ACRA, CBT, EMDR, DBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, the research on the efficacy of counseling, Scott Miller PhD., Bruce Wampold PhD., The Alliance Effect, The Allegiance Effect, and the importance of an agreed upon counseling model, psycho-pharmaceuticals, medications, vitamin D, statin medications, side effects, the root cause, existentialism, PTSD, EMDR, Levels of Care, ASAM criteria, Psychoeducation, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Developmental Stages of a Human, Reduction-ism, Holistic thinking, living between the opposites, Stages of Change, The Transtheoretical Model of Change, the Parable of the Hole, “Resistance”, Motivational Interviewing, Coping Skills, Rituals for Health, Tai Chi, Cross Fit, Yoga, Psyche, Soul, Group Psychotherapy, Narrative Therapy, the importance of the story, the importance of relationships, Systems Therapy, Couples Therapy, bearing witness to suffering, Bio Psycho Social (Sexual and Spiritual) model, Mindfulness, Existential Psychotherapy, Death and Meaning, Trauma, the nervous system, Somatic Experiencing Therapy, Art Therapy, Nature Therapy, Greenhouse Gasses, Joseph Campbell, Depth Psychology, Transpersonal Therapy, Jungian Analysis, Thomas Moore, Wisdom versus Knowledge, Imagination, Carl Jung, Adaptation, the shadow, Quantum Physics, Focusing techniques, Eugene Gendlin, Postmodernism, the breakdown of old patterns and grand narratives, human evolution, The People’s History of the United States, Doing one’s “inner work”, James Hillman.

Tuesday Oct 16, 2018
Tuesday Oct 16, 2018
In this solo episode, Paul Krauss MA LPC reflects on his ten years of providing psychotherapy in a variety of contexts and with diverse populations and socioeconomic demographics. This is part one of two episodes of reflections on Paul's life and career. In part one, Paul discusses more of his personal journey that led him from newly graduated to starting a successful private practice, as well learning many different techniques and lessons along the way. Paul discusses the struggles of trying to find his way in the field of psychology and the ups and downs and difficulties, but also the personal transformation that he went through along the way to his current situation. Paul hopes that this podcast will help new therapists that are getting into the field that are looking for direction as well as seasoned professionals who are looking for new ways to work and help others.
*Psychotherapy is interchangeable with the term Counseling.* But since there are many "types" of counseling that have nothing to do with psychology (credit counseling, etc.), Paul chose this term for a direct reference
In part two, Paul Krauss will discuss his experience and opinions with various modalities of psychotherapy and their implications (Part 2 will be released as Episode 21).

In this episode Paul Krauss invites Rafe Adams to tell the story of Francis of Assisi. Rafe Adams has a gift for story telling and you are bound to enjoy this telling of the tale. Rafe makes sure to frame the cultural context and mood of the historical times. Rafe discusses the famous conversion of Francis from a young man of privilege into one who took a vow of poverty and lived with lepers in order to live out the words of the gospels, literally. Rafe discusses the rejection of Francis by his own Father and Brother and draws parallels to the current zeitgeist of the United States, including: the gap between the rich and the poor, as well as what happens to those born of privilege when they challenge entrenched ideas, laws, and economic issues of the day. Rafe also discusses the cultural significance of Francis' founding of the Order of Friars Minor (aka "The Franciscans"). Rafe artfully moves from his points about Francis of Assisi's life and work and connects to the theme of the broader human experience. Rafe and Paul discuss how in Francis’ time and with today, people risk rejection by kin and “cultural tribe” if they espouse causes that work to help "the least of these", refuse to kowtow to popular economic powers, or speak loudly and passionately about unpopular truths. Also discussed: BBQ, personal transformation, rejection, Counseling, Psychology, and Spirituality.
The Rt. Rev. Raphael Adams (Rafe Adams), MS OTR/L is the Bishop of the Mid-American Diocese of the Ecumenical Catholic Communication. He is a member of the Franciscans of Reconciliation. He is a former professor at Rush University Chicago, Psychosocial Rehabilitation Consultant, and Occupational Therapist.

Playing all the Parts with Kelley Stoltz [Episode 17]
Friday Jun 15, 2018
Friday Jun 15, 2018
In the first of a series on music, Paul Krauss interviews singer-songwriter Kelley Stoltz. Kelley Stoltz is a prolific artist hailing from San Francisco who is deeply involved in the craft of writing songs and helping others with theirs. Interestingly, Kelley actually plays ALL of the instruments on his songs--having learned to play piano, drums, bass, and synthesizers in addition to his first instrument, the guitar. Kelley has a unique and creative style of song craft and varies the theme of his sound from release to release. In addition to having written a large body of varying styles of rock and folk as well as sincere and existentially significant songs, Kelley has developed an alter-ego in Willie Weird and released two albums of songs, best described as a genre of dark-comedy. Learn more from the source: http://www.KelleyStoltz.com/
In this interview, Kelley discusses both current events as well as his story that led him into a career in music. This is a story of finding one's calling and then finding a way to do it for a lifetime. Psychological concepts that haphazardly made it into the discussion are risk, discipline, calling, dedication, craftsmanship, traveling, community, friendship, and more.
When he is not writing and recording music Kelley has been known to make his own lunches, assemble his own electric guitars, support other artists, tell jokes, play drums for Sonny and the Sunsets, record local San Francisco bands, and tour as the rhythm guitarist of Echo & the Bunnymen. And this is only PART of the story--so listen to the entire interview! Also discussed: Detroit (where Kelley is originally from), New York, Jeff Buckley, and Touring Europe.

Why we need a National Violence Prevention Hotline [Episode 16]
Tuesday May 15, 2018
Tuesday May 15, 2018
In this special episode, Paul introduces the idea of having a National Violence Prevention Hotline specifically for individuals who are feeling compelled toward comitting acts of violence, to talk with a trained counselor on the phone, work to de-esclate, and connect them with appropriate resources. Like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, The National Violence Prevention Hotline seeks to staff professional counselors to take calls from people who are in distress. The difference is that the Violence Prevention Hotline will attempt to reach and work with people who are contemplating violent acts against others.
Most violence is preventable. While it comes down to the individual's choice to act, we are hoping that providing this resource would lead to decreases in violence, because there would be 24/7 support for those feeling angry, isolated, disavowed, persecuted, and whatever else is leading them toward considering comitting violent acts. In the second half of the episode, Paul Krauss and Mike Speakman (anger expert) discuss the psychology, motivations, and social circumstances that can lead to people feeling desperate enough to hurt others.

Paul Krauss MA LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Professional Consultant who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is the host of The Intentional Clincian podcast and also works to train counselors on best practices to improve their outcomes with clients. Paul has worked with many different populations and has spent a great deal of his time working specifically with people who are recovering from some type of trauma—often times from a type of violence or a severe accident. Paul believes that every human being has the potential to transform in a powerful way and works with people from all walks of life to meet their potential as humans, to heal, and to make changes.
Paul conceived of the idea for the National Violence Prevention Hotline after a series of events, including hearing a story of a person refraining from committing a violent act because a kind woman confronted this potential offender while he was in emotional distress, guns in hand and ready to act against innocent citizens, with empathy and understanding, at just the right time. As a result of her outreach to him, he put down his weapons and asked for the police to be called and get professional help–he received it. At that moment, Paul realized that we have hotlines to prevent suicides and help the victims of domestic violence, but not to prevent or deal with violence or those who perpetrate it more broadly. His vision is to help save lives and reduce the devastating impact of violence on people, relationships, and communities.
The National Violence Prevention Hotline (NVPH) proposes to provide free, confidential, expert support for people in distress and feeling compelled toward committing acts of violence in the future. It may also provide a lifeline for victims of violence who have not yet called the police and are seeking counsel regarding their situation.
