Paul Krauss MA LPC presents:
What is Trauma-Informed Counseling and What is the Science Behind It?
In partnership with Acadia Health's online series "All the Rage." To educate practitioners on various topics.

The neurobiology studies and scientific research which launched the trauma-informed care initiative in the last 20 years, is one of the most important developments in understanding the human condition, the way in which symptoms originate, how life experiences and “trauma” influence the spectrum of human adaptation, thoughts, behaviors, physical health and more—and is the key to understanding the importance of the entire mind-body therapy paradigm as well as why integrated care is paramount for the prevention of and recovery from mental illness.
This presentation outlines some of the copious amounts of research that have proven the trauma-informed care paradigm to be empirically valid, and how knowledge of trauma-informed counseling techniques can lead to improved outcomes in all forms of healthcare—including, and especially mental health interventions.
This presentation will educate practitioners on how to recognize the common experiences and reactions to trauma. In addition, this presentation will equip practitioners with simple ways to begin utilizing a trauma-informed care paradigm with counseling techniques to empower and educate clients—so that they may begin the journey of recovery and continue on into personal resiliency.
Further, this presentation aims to utilize the basic scientific facts of trauma-informed care to challenge ingrained cultural notions that often distort, dilute, and contaminate the interventions of many well-meaning by clinicians who are not “trauma-informed” and do not have any trauma-specific interventions in their clinical “toolbox.” This presentation will also touch on current and generational societal attitudes and assumptions that perpetuate traumatic incidents within the culture of the United States—as well as the statistical odds of negative health outcomes that may result from suffering a trauma or multiple traumatic events (e.g. hypertension, increased risk of suicide, increased risk of suffering from severe mental illness, increased risk of obesity and related pulmonary disorders, increased risk of drug/alcohol addiction, increased statistical odds of being a victim of violence etc.).

Adam Nash LPC joins Paul Krauss MA LPC for a discussion on “the shadow” and how this concept specifically applies to men. Paul and Adam discuss the concepts of “the shadow”, the persona, ego, repression, projection, the Johari Window, personality theory, Shadow Work, Scapegoating, the collective cultural or political shadow, Masculinity and the Shadow, shadow possession and more.
If you are a person who is wanting to explore the reasons why you continually have similar outcomes with relationships, jobs, or projects despite the circumstances or locations changing, then Shadow Work may be for you. It is important to find a licensed professional counselor or therapist that is knowledgeable about Shadow Work before embarking on this journey. There are many coaches that advertise "shadow work" and if you work with a coach who does not have clinical training or follow a code of ethics, you are definitely more at risk of having a negative experience.
The shadow is a concept largely explored by Carl Jung, a psychoanalyst who broke off from Sigmund Freud, who theorized that hidden within us all is our “shadow” which is aspects of our self that we either keep hidden, from ourselves and others, or have never even realized that they are there.
Hidden or unconscious aspects of oneself, both good and bad, which the ego has either repressed or never recognized. -Carl Jung
Carl Jung believed that in order to become a healthy person one must learn about their own shadow otherwise they would continue to live their life with a “mask on” --concealing parts of themselves from themselves and others.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. -Carl Jung

Paul Krauss MA LPC and Dr. Isaac Bentwich talk about why this ancient sacred Sanskrit scripture (part of Hindu epic Mahabharata) is relevant and useful today to all people, regardless of spiritual orientation. Dr. Bentwich has completed a modern translation of The Bhagavad Gita, simply titled: "Gita - A Timeless Guide For Our Time." Dr. Bentwich explains the features of his translation of the sacred text and shares multiple passages that apply to the state of our world today--both our inner consciousness and our rapidly changing environment.
- Our daily struggles in life are ‘battlefields’, just like that of Gita’s prince, which provide us an opportunity to grow spiritually.
- Wisdom and happiness are within us and do not depend on any external guru, teacher or religion.
- Gita’s dialogue between master and disciple is really our own dialogue with the inner voice of our soul.
The Gita is a powerful guide for happiness, meditation, and inner-growth, one that’s written specifically for ordinary people like you and me and you, who are living and working in this crazy, troubled, beautiful world of ours. If you are seeking happiness and fulfillment in your life through inner-growth — you are welcome to the Gita! It is a magical little book that captures the deepest truths of all spiritual paths and all religions and conveys them in a simple, practical way, that we can all understand and relate to. As you read and meditate on its verses, their poetic form lets them pleasantly ‘roll around’ in your mind, ‘doing their thing’. Gradually, they help bring about changes in the way you view and act in the world. Empowering you to do good in the world, and to be transformed in the process; to change the world around you, by first changing the world within.- Dr. Isaac Bentwich, M.D.
Isaac Bentwich M.D. is a longtime practitioner and teacher of Yoga and Meditation. Trained as a physician and a scientist, he has founded three life-science technology companies, leading revolutions in medicine, genomics, and environment conservation. The vision and innovations that underlay these companies, came through periods of silent meditation retreats, at the foothills of the Himalayas and elsewhere. His path is one of reverence to the Wisdom teachings that shine through different traditions and religions. The study and practice of Gita's Wisdom teachings has profoundly touched his life, and he is passionate sharing this with others. His work on this translation of the Gita has spanned twelve years.

Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews Hoarding Behavior Expert, Author, Consultant and Therapist Elaine Birchall, MSW, about her work helping people all over the globe be able to overcome hoarding behaviors. If you are interested in or impact by hoarding, this is not a conversation you will want to miss!
Elaine Birchall, MSW, is a hoarding behavior and intervention specialist and coauthor of Conquer the Clutter: Strategies to Identify, Manage, and Overcome Hoarding (with Suzanne Cronkwright). Elaine helps to demystify and de-stigmatize hoarding. Elaine discusses the latest research on and strategies for treating hoarding disorder, shares real cases mined from her 18 years in the field, and offers tools to help clinicians assess where their clients may fall on the hoarding spectrum.
More than 19 million Americans hoard, many more are impacted. Hoarding comes with enormous costs to relationships, time, focus, peace of mind, and self-respect. It devastates relationships and it harms the emotional health of the children involved. Hoarding can also become a legal, personal, and public health and safety issue. Without hoarding-informed supportive interventions, people who hoard will continue to experience further deterioration in their mental health and in their living conditions.
More about Elaine Birchall:
• Director of Birchall Consulting & founder of the Canadian National Hoarding Coalition
• Helps individuals with hoarding disorder to understand and change their relationship to things—and to clean up their environment
• Trains mental health professionals across North America on how to treat folks who hoard and counsel family members impacted

Paul Krauss MA LPC begins this episode of the Intentional Clinician Podcast by giving some background to the discussion that is to take place. Paul reads from and comments on Matthew Fox’s Book: The Hidden Spirituality of Men: Ten Metaphors to Awaken the Sacred Masculine. Together, Paul and this material raise many questions that are facing the culture today. Paul especially focuses on the topic of masculinity, and maleness in the culture of the United States—and the challenges facing men and boys today. Following this, Remahn joins the conversation which was recorded in March 2019.
Remahn Farley and Paul Krauss MA LPC have an honest discussion in the moment about their thoughts about an array of unanswerable global questions mostly concerning what it means to be a man, and the confusion and change that men are going through in western culture. Both Paul and Remahn reflect on their personal experiences growing up and how this affected them as males.
My goal was to release this episode in the series of discussion on men (the first episode in the series on men was released as episode #37 and followed up by episode #40). In New Orleans, in March 2019, Remahn and I sought to have an honest discussion about the issues facing men from our perspective at the time.
Also discussed: The need for men to discuss issues and not bury their feelings. Where are the male role models today? Making decisions from an ego or making the best decision for the situation. Is it ok for men to display vulnerable emotions in today’s society? #MeToo Movement. Matthew Fox’s book The Hidden Spirituality of Men: Ten Metaphors to Awaken the Sacred Masculine. Instant reactions versus responding. Stereotypes of Men not displaying emotions. The effects of the instant news media and social media. Twitter. Free speech and the marketplace. Changes in gender roles in the United States. How you are taught indirectly while growing up. Men learning from authentic conversations with women. How do you go deep and talk with men? Evolving and growing and changing your viewpoints. Hanging on to older viewpoints. Growing up in the patriarchy. The influence of different roles and lessons. Attempting to understand other people and their viewpoints. How do you have balance? How do we deal with vulnerability and shame? When are men allowed to express their emotions? Tribalism. A larger consciousness. As a culture, are we on the same team, or is life about productivity and power? It starts with the personal and then works toward the collective. How do we empower men, instead of reacting to the women’s movement? How can men and women work together in the culture? How can men evolve and lead better? How do men gain power in ways that are ethical—and translate that into authority? How can we be pro-human? Why is authoritarian power emerging? Why is emotional intelligence important? Courage. Hero worship. The grey areas of trying to “Do good works.” Follow the money. The Citizens United decision. The difference between what is right and what the law is. Money becoming speech and power. Gas lighting. The need for male role models. Colin Kaepernick. Star Spangled Banner. Questioning the past and then improving your present and future. What do we do with emotions that have not been dealt with? As men, how do we improve our relationships and other things we are involved in? The city of New Orleans. etc.

Review of MOTEL by Mitchell Hillman of the Phoenix New Times:
The musicians behind indie outfits PAWL and ttypes have teamed up for the collaborative concept album MOTEL to be released Spring of 2020. Brothers Paul and Tim Krauss had an unusual childhood to say the very least, they were raised in a Midwest roadside motel and over the last decade they have been composing an album about that experience. It's the stuff of American legends, which begs the question do artistic people create unusual lives or do unusual lives create artists?
There is no doubt that growing up around a small town oasis with recurring guests and an ever changing cast of characters will mold your perceptions of life and the world, and these brothers have put that upbringing to music, beautiful, catchy music. MOTEL is a near hour long summary of the years spent at the motor inn, the people and events that shaped them, and the growth that was forced upon them. It's as much a coming of age story as it is a reflection in later life of the place they called home set to an Indie Pop backdrop that captivates the listeners attention from beginning to end.
The fifteen songs on the album are a sheer delight for anyone that's a fan of Brian Wilson, Ben Folds, T. Rex, Apples In Stereo, Elephant 6 and music that makes your head bop, your toes tap, your hips swing all while wearing a grin. It's also an amazing journey in storytelling as the brothers recount the innocence of childhood, nostalgia for rainy autumn days, weird goings on at a nearby lake, early experiences with women, their own relationship as siblings and an evening of a possible UFO sighting. They also present vignettes on the strange guests they encountered from a wanted criminal to a charlatan preacher to a Vietnam vet with PTSD who hoards newspapers.
The album is filled with singles ready for radio right out of the gate, tunes like "Good Boy Young," "Colorado," and "Captured Light" all of which will punch through your day with sunshine fix. The T. Rex influence on "The Shore," "You're My Brother," and "Jealousy" make for easy rockers to get into that sound like instant classics through nostalgia colored glasses. Meanwhile "Small Town" and "Newspaper Mountains" evoke the best of Ben Folds. That's only half of the album, while the rest will keep you tuned in and your headphones on as the stories of their youth unfold before you. The lyrics are as captivating as the Indie Pop pastiche that surrounds them, with flawless vocals and layers of harmony.
While Paul and Tim are the main men behind the music they had a little help from their friends in making MOTEL. Christopher Kennedy (No Volcano, Kingfathand, Colorstore) contributed drums, guitar and bass throughout; Conrad Shock (Conrad Shock and The Noise) laid down some bass, guitar, and banjo; while Dan Julian contributed drums, Sean Maginity played guitar on "Colorado", Jim Rockwood provided drums for "Room 5" and their lead producer, Jupiter Jones helped out with synth, organ, back-up vocals and co-wrote "Room 5" with the brothers.
Check in to MOTEL and check it out, the musical journey through time and space is an amazing one for your ears to behold. You'll find yourself singing these songs to yourself, days later and that's when you know you need to spin it again.
--This episode discusses the concepts of how growing up in a certain dwelling place and neighborhood shapes one's view of people, of what home is and isn't, long-term projects, art for the sake of expression, and more. Also discussed: the relationship you have with a space and a place. Identity. Music. Art. Pianos. Remembering the same event from two very different perspectives, and more. --

What does “Black Lives Matter” mean? (A Panel Discussion)
Paul Krauss MA LPC hosts a panel discussion on Zoom with 3 of his friends, (Remahn, Chris, and James) who happen to be African-American males, to discuss the death of George Floyd and what “Black Lives Matter” mean and other related topics. If you are new to this topic or just curious, please remember to normalize changing your opinion on something after learning new information. It is ok. I promise. Evolution is natural. Denial is natural, but does not move you forward. I have personally changed my viewpoints on these issues as I evolved as a person. In fact, I learned new things and broadened my perspective during this conversation. I encourage you, whoever you are, to listen to this discussion and read through the sources and resources in the show notes.
On May 25, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, after a deli employee called 911, accusing him of buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Seventeen minutes after the first squad car arrived at the scene, Mr. Floyd was unconscious and pinned beneath three police officers, showing no signs of life.
By combining videos from bystanders and security cameras, reviewing official documents and consulting experts, The New York Times reconstructed in detail the minutes leading to Mr. Floyd’s death. Our video shows officers taking a series of actions that violated the policies of the Minneapolis Police Department and turned fatal, leaving Mr. Floyd unable to breathe, even as he and onlookers called out for help.
The day after Mr. Floyd’s death, the Police Department fired all four of the officers involved in the episode, and on Friday the Hennepin County attorney, Mike Freeman, announced murder and manslaughter charges against Derek Chauvin, the officer who can be seen most clearly in witness videos pinning Mr. Floyd to the ground. Mr. Chauvin, who is white, kept his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, according to the criminal complaint against him. Our video shows that Mr. Chauvin did not remove his knee even after Mr. Floyd lost consciousness, and for a full minute after paramedics arrived at the scene.
Imagine your child dies prematurely and you are hosting the funeral and you are giving a eulogy explaining what your own child meant to you and how special your child was, and then someone grabs the mic and says “Actually all children are special…” That’s what “all lives matter” sounds like. Embarrassing.
The whole point of Black Lives Matters was to bring attention to multiple issues, but one of the most pressing is: police are killing unarmed African-Americans at a much higher rate than Caucasian Americans. This is an undisputed fact.
We said “Black Lives Matter.” We never said “Only Black Lives Matter.” We Know “All lives matter.” We just need your help with Black Lives Matter for Black Lives are currently in Danger.
Also Discussed: Police Murders of unarmed African-Americans, Billie Eilish, Journalists are being arrested, America is at a boiling point, protests, Black lives Matter, stress, Covid-19 pandemic, unemployment at an all time high, fear, Racism, It is not getting worse, it is just being filmed, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Minneapolis Police, unnecessary neck restraints, Joe Biden’s foot in his mouth, lack of empathy, showing “black death” on Facebook and youtube, this struggle of African-Americans speaking out against police brutality has been going on for decades, Trump as a reflection of what America was built on, the mask is off, Colin Kaepernick, Black Unity, Domestic Abuse Metaphors, White people not understanding, critical thought, cultural attitudes, cultural encapsulation, reforming the police, already having your mind made up, identity politics, Qualified immunity, they used to hang African-American people after church, the murder of Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, Sandyhook, Cliven Bundy stand off with the US Government, caucasian Quarantine protestors in Michigan where protesters holding semi-automatic weapons yelled in the face of Police Officers—but were not harmed or arrested, cultural attitude collectives, many elder Caucasian Men in the United States in denial and dismissive of these concerns, institutional racism, having uncomfortable conversations, actually experiencing racism, it is easy to ignore racism when it isn’t happening to you, Know Justice - Know Peace, no Justice - No Peace, How can you combat racism as a white person? These are the last words of George Floyd, a 46-year-old man who died as a US police officer pinned him down, kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes:
"It's my face man
I didn't do nothing serious man
please
please
please I can't breathe
please man
please somebody
please man
I can't breathe
I can't breathe
please
(inaudible)
man can't breathe, my face
just get up
I can't breathe
please, a knee on my neck
I can't breathe
shit
I will
I can't move
mama
mama
I can't
my knee
my neck
I'm through
I'm through
I'm claustrophobic
my stomach hurt
my neck hurts
everything hurts
some water or something
please
please
I can't breathe officer
don't kill me
they're gonna kill me, man
come on man
I cannot breathe
I cannot breathe
they're gonna kill me
they're gonna kill me
I can't breathe
I can't breathe
please sir
please
please
please I can't breathe"
Then, his eyes shut and the pleas stop. George Floyd was pronounced dead shortly after.’
