If you have ever wondered about how education can improve us as people, then this is the episode for you. Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews Dr. Duncan Pritchard, Ph.D about a holistic method of learning "how" to think instead of just "what" to think. Learn more what Intellectual Virtues are and how they may help you and your organization flourish.
In 2019, Duncan Pritchard Ph.D, Distinguished Professor of philosophy at the University of California, Irvine, launched a pilot program called “Anteater Virtues” – a series of interdisciplinary, faculty-led modules geared toward promoting a set of intellectual character traits – curiosity, integrity, humility and tenacity - that can help students develop into more inquisitive, open-minded and authentic individuals.
Early results demonstrate that program participants show greater intellectual growth than their peers, with this positive effect stable across all the main demographic groupings.
“Intellectual virtues promote ways of thinking, reasoning and seeking the truth. Learning intellectual humility, for example, can enhance open-mindedness and respect for other people’s opinions, whereas intellectual tenacity can improve students’ willingness to overcome intellectual obstacles,” Pritchard says. He adds that these skills are essential not only for academic pursuits, but also for navigating a daily life that’s increasingly online and often laced with misinformation and manipulation.

Dr. Deborah Korn, PsyD, recently co-wrote a book with Michael Baldwin (an advertising executive), who had suffered for years without answers. Even after seeing eight therapists, Michael continued to suffer from symptoms until he finally met an EMDR therapist and went through EMDR therapy. Michael now considers himself recovered and he has never been happier. Michael is a fierce proponent of EMDR therapy and contacted Dr. Deborah Korn, PsyD--together they wrote "Every Memory Deserves Respect" a book about EMDR therapy for the public and clinicians alike.
Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews Deborah Korn, PsyD about EMDR therapy, the research supporting it, the process, how it works differently than talk therapy, and more. If you are interested in EMDR therapy--this episode has some of the most easy to understand rhetoric about the process. We hope you enjoy!
Deborah L. Korn, PsyD, a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Cambridge, MA, is on the faculties of the EMDR Institute in CA and the Trauma Research Foundation in Boston. She is an EMDR International Association-approved consultant and presents and consults internationally on the treatment of adult survivors of childhood abuse and neglect.

If you are someone interested in both ancient wisdom and modern science's approaches to mental health and wellness, then you are going to love this interview as Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews 2 experts who have a penchant for convergence. While most of the United States is clearly divided on political stances, the same often goes for medicine where people will blindly dismiss anything that doesn't fit their personal identity paradigm, sticking to their version of "medicine" with an emotional fervor: Either 1. Modern/ Western Medicine Approaches, or 2. Natural or "holistic" Methods. While the emerging field of Functional Medicine has made some progress on merging the best of Modern and Holistic Approaches, it often falls short. Dr. Nicole Cain ND MA (Board-Certified NMD in Arizona and Master's of Clinical Psychology) and Hadlee Garrison (University of Michigan with a B.S. in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience and an Master's of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education) are a powerhouse in utilizing both the research, testing, and breakthroughs of modern and Western medicine along with time-tested approaches that are more Natural and Holistic. The conversation flows are we explore what exactly "holistic mental health" is and why it is important to people who are looking to heal from mental health related stress and improve overall wellness.
Dr. Nicole Cain, ND MA is a nationally renowned expert in natural mental health, helping people transform their mental health naturally by uncovering the root cause. She has been published by Salon Magazine, Well + Good, Psychology Today, quoted in Forbes and more!
Happy Healthy Hadlee is an ayurvedic expert, academic, healer and her mission is to teach people how to transform their habits, health, bodies, energy, confidence, and all of the other things in order to lead less stressed and more joyful lives.

Dr. Peg O'Conner Ph.D is interviewed by Paul Krauss MA LPC about the addiction recovery community, the difficulties with the Christian-centric God that is a part of many Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, how to participate in recovery and understand the concept of a "higher power," etc. Dr. Peg also discusses her personal journey in recovery as well.
Dr. Peg O'Conner's book Higher and Friendly Powers (Wildhouse Publications / September 1, 2022) is a comprehensive alternative for people who have had trouble with the "higher power" of AA's 12-step program. It delivers a feeling of human decency, moral principles, and even a better version of oneself.
Peg O'Connor, PhD, speaks to those in recovery who have battled with the Christian-centered God at the center of Alcoholics Anonymous in Higher and Friendly Powers. She draws our attention to a little-known fact: William James, a philosopher, psychologist, and intellectual titan of the early 20th century, created the phrase "higher power," a touchstone in Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve steps.
Peg O’Connor, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of her sobriety because of the concept of a “higher power,” she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her new book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, 2022).

Paul Krauss MA LPC and Joshua Nave MS LMSW discuss power, abuse, control, and gaslighting within relationships (domestic violence), but also within cultural entities, organizations, and society as a whole. The pair define power, abuse, gaslighting and control tactics used by abusers, some of the ways that they use them to keep control in a relationship, and how often times the abusers view them themselves as "victims" to rationalize their behavior. Of course, depending on one's culture of origin and background, there are many considerations and ways of "framing" these topics--and Joshua and Paul discuss this from a viewpoint that seeks cultural competency and understanding.
Later on Joshua Nave and Paul Krauss discuss how to reclaim one's voice if you have been abused, controlled, or "gaslit" by a person or an entity that was attempting to keep power over you.

Paul Krauss MA LPC chats with author Sheila Vanzile about her new book:
MY WATERFALL OF AWAKENING:
HOW LOSS CAN BRING YOU HOME TO THE LIFE YOU WANT
A GUIDED JOURNAL
In this interview, Sheila brings her wisdom and special brand of authenticity and honesty to the Intentional Clinician Podcast. Sheila tells some of her story about how she arrived at her own awakening as well as the "fall out" from listening to herself and taking action.
About the Author (Sheila Vanzile): "I am the product of the first generation of career women that were gifted the ability to juggle “real” careers and family - the outcome of the original feminist movement of the 1960’s. We worked 2 full time jobs for decades, one outside the home, and the other managing the home. I was by all accounts wildly successful in my business career, but not without a cost. As part of that generation, I neglected my own needs, and landed squarely at 60 disconnected, dissatisfied and unfulfilled. At 60, I emerged from my mother’s death exhausted from caregiving and ready to collapse. But I had been gifted time as a result. And I committed to myself that I would use that time deliberately to reshape my life. To convert my existence from being a slave to the “shoulds” of the 60 year old women of the world to rediscovering and embracing the person I had left behind decades ago. Over the subsequent 3 years, I began a deliberate search for spiritual awakening."

If you are looking for practical ways to increase your mental well being--then this episode is for you. Dr. Vermani is a positive force for anyone struggling.
One of Canada’s highest-rated clinical psychologists, Dr. Monica Vermani is a public speaker, teacher, and author in the field of mental health and wellness. In her private practice, Dr. Vermani provides a multi-faceted treatment approach in treating adolescents and adults suffering from trauma/abuse, mood, anxiety, substance addictions, and other related conditions and disorders, as well as family and couples therapy. Paul Krauss MA LPC presents:
Family engagement for sustainable recovery when dealing with trauma, and the after effects of trauma
Description: This presentation covers how to engage with a family system that has lived through traumatic events or is dealing with current traumatic circumstances. To do this, first, trauma is defined through a scientific and sociological lens; a discussion of how trauma effects may affect a person takes place, and the differences between PTSD, trauma and stress are discussed. The Adverse Child Experiences (ACE) study is explored in how it links traumatic events to long-term negative health events in most people and in most family systems—and how these findings can help clinicians understand clients better. The presentation then focuses on the environment of the family home, the particular family’s behaviors, and the neighborhood in which they reside as important aspects in both understanding trauma, mental health, and working on preventing long-term trauma. The presentation concludes with methods to help families that have endured environmental trauma, how to work with individuals who have experienced trauma that impacts their mental health, and concludes with tips on how clinicians can help families on the road to a sustainable recovery from the after-effects of trauma.

In this episode, Paul Krauss MA LPC speaks with Brian Bailys of Thrive Peer Support about how a newly expanded Peer Support in Ohio is helping individuals get into treatment and change their lives. Throughout the conversation, Brian discusses how strategic forms of Peer Support programs can help everyone from people coming in to the Emergency Room after an overdose to those struggling with navigating the health care system. Thrive Peer Support primarily helps those who are working on overcoming mental health concerns and addiction. Thrive Peer Support continues to grow and is showing excellent outcomes so far; demonstrating why good peer support programs are needed all over the US.
Brian Bailys founded, Ascent, a continuing care solution for people in recovery from substance use disorders and mental health diagnoses. The genesis of the Ascent Solution was based on Brian’s experience in treatment. Ascent began by combining an evidence based mobile app with 24/7/365 peer recovery coaching and in 2017 began to expand into “live” face to face peer recovery coaching. Thus evolved ThriveED (Thrive Emergency Department FKA AscentED) where peer coaches began providing round the clock peer recovery support to individuals in the MetroHealth (Cleveland, OH) emergency department.
In early 2018, Brian formed a partnership with Thrive Behavioral Health/Thrive Peer Support. This has allowed Thrive to provide peer support to Medicaid eligible patients across NE Ohio and serve as advocates on behalf of those recovery.
Brian has spoken on various opiate and recovery related panels and been a part of multiple opiate and behavioral health task forces in Ohio. Brian advocates for the individual in recovery and their families.
