Wednesday Apr 11, 2018
Wednesday Apr 11, 2018
Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews Dr. Nicole Cain ND, MA about why what we eat can influence not only our physical health, but our mental well being. Paul wants to know what our "gut system" is and how that has anything to do with "Psychology." Dr. Cain discusses why "Gut Health" is all the rage these days and why it is important for those in the field of psychology to understand as well. Since Paul Krauss is not a doctor who understands diets, Dr. Cain explains in an easy to understand way, how even Paul can make changes to his diet that (over time) can affect his physical and mental wellness. Paul Krauss MA LPC also reads from and asks questions of Dr. Cain about her book, entitled "Gut Psychology." Dr. Cain discusses why there is an extraordinary amount of research coming out about "gut health" and how, in fact, most of human's serotonin is made in the gut (not the brain!).

Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews Randy Webb MA MC LPC LMHC (TRN/HAP EMDR Facilitator, and trainer of Ericksonian Methods, behavioral health topics, and more—and learning consultant). Randy and Paul discuss trauma-informed care, and “modern integrated care” based on the latest neuroscience research, neurobiology, counseling and behavioral health research. Paul and Randy discuss Randy’s background in becoming a therapist and eventually a consultant and trainer by exploring his roots in training with the Milton H. Erickson Foundation. Eventually, the topic shifts to trauma-informed care and how to integrate that into many facets of the medical community both in and outside of the behavioral health system. EMDR therapy and other mind-body techniques are discussed. Further, Randy proposes that new terminology is emerging or needs to emerge to describe the integration of neurological and medical research on the entire “nervous system” and how this emerging data is merging with concepts from psychology and counseling. Many ideas are shared and questions, such as “what does whole-person care look like, in a system with limited time and resources?” And what does it mean to switch from fixing issues after they are broken, or investing in prevention. The conversation eventually covers how a modern integrated care approach and the awareness of a new intregrate paradigm can influence the community at large.
Randy Webb MA MC LPC LMHC works in Phoenix, AZ as a Private Practice Counselor, TRN/ HAP EMDR Facilitator, and a learning consultant for a large behavioral health organization in Maricopa County Arizona. Randy can be contacted through his email lluvia357@gmail.com

The Intentional Clinician Episode #9: From Fragementation to Wholeness
In this solo episode, I discuss how our attitudes and personal habits effect the way we live, and how to bring about change in a fast-paced world, with regards to the following broad concepts: the concepts of fragmentation and wholeness, feeling overwhelmed by choices and the constant bombardment of media in our current culture, how to deal with the paradox of risk and uncertainty in life, how to find a passion and keep it, and go from being a master of none to a master of something. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. I will use many of my own stories throughout, stories I have heard, as well as quotes from authors and philosophers that I like.
Here is a quote about wholeness that spoke to me: Wholeness does not mean perfection, it means embracing brokenness as an integral part of life.- Parker J. Palmer

In part 1 of my conversation with Mike Speakman, we discuss how to help “drug-proof” your child, how recovery works, and what to do about the drug addiction issues facing our community. We talk about recovery from addiction, cultural rites of passage, personal growth through relationships, family, community, and counseling. We discuss how delayed emotional growth in children may contribute to illegal drug use as an adult. We discuss how parents can intervene successfully to help an addicted child. We discuss the current culture in the United States and how we can all help our neighbors and children to navigate some of the difficulties facing our communities through drugs and other forms of addiction. We discuss personal growth and how to be open to different points of view so that you can help yourself and others to change. It's difficult to summarize this vibrant and wide-ranging conversation. We hope you enjoy this interview with Mike Speakman LISAC, founder of the PAL support group (parents of addicted loved ones).
Most children in the United States will end up experimenting with drugs by the time they are adults, so you can't really ever drug-proof anyone 100%, but there are many things to learn as a family member or friend that can help someone steer clear of drug addiction. Learn how by working with a counselor who has experience with addiction work and check out Mike's book here.

The Intentional Clinician, Episode #3 Counseling is an Effective Form of Treatment.
Paul Krauss MA LPC discusses the overwhelming empirical evidence that counseling is an extremely effective form of treatment. Counseling is safe and has preventative effects. Research studies have noted that the effects of counseling typically last longer than pharmacological treatments. Paul discusses many studies that conclude that counseling works and should be used as a "first-line" treatment for most non-life-threatening mental health situations. Counseling is also known as psychotherapy.
If a person is suffering from any type of emotoinal or psychological disturbance, counseling is a safe form of treatment that can allow them to recover and feel like themselves again-- without side effects. If someone is already on a medication, counseling can help the person get to the root cause of what the medication is helping with--and possibly enhance the healing effects.
Counseling is an effective form of treatment for depression, anxiety, relationship issues, emotional disturbance, ADHD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (especially EMDR treatment, which Paul is trained in), addiction, stress, unwanted behaviors, panic disorders, anger issues, eating disorders, bipolar disorders, ADHD, phobias, including social phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), self-harm, substance abuse, and more.

The Intentional Clinician, Episode #2: Overcoming Emotional Eating with Karthik Ramanan (Soon-to-be Dr. Ramanan).
Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews soon-to-be Naturopathic Doctor Karthik Ramanan about his life, emotional eating, lifestyle medicine, preventative medicine, depression, mental health, overcoming self-doubt, food addiction, overcoming an unhealthy lifestyle, and much much more.
At 27 years old, Karthik's life was successful by most standards. He had a well paying corporate job in the finance industry. He was able to pay off his undergraduate student loans. He lived in a nice apartment. But with the accumulated stress from work and years-long low self-image, Karthik found himself to be 100 pounds overweight and headed in the direction of chronic disease and an unfulfilling life.
In 2011, that all changed. In a moment of "enough is enough", he discovered the power of eating real, earth-grown foods and shifting his mindset, believing that he too could find fulfillment and health. He then proceeded to change careers, lose 100 pounds, and started a four-year accredited program at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ to become a Naturopathic Doctor.
Karthik is on a mission to help others like him shed their previously held beliefs of what's possible for themselves, overcome lifestyle ailments and chronic stress, and find fulfillment and true health.
