Paul Krauss MA LPC speaks with Andy Clark, Ph.D. about the human brain, consciousness, and functions of the mind. This is an episode for anyone who is curious about how human consciousness forms our reality and functions in real time. Andy has a great deal of excellent examples, stories, and anecdotes to share.
"Human brains are prediction machines,” contends Clark (Surfing Uncertainty), a cognitive philosophy professor at the University of Sussex, in this eye-opening study. Pushing back against the idea that the brain passively processes information from the senses, Clark argues that the organ is instead constantly predicting external reality based on previous experiences and adjusting mental impressions as new information arises.
Andy Clark's new book: THE EXPERIENCE MACHINE: How Our Minds Predict and Shape Reality (2023 | Pantheon), professor of cognitive philosophy Andy Clark’s brilliant new theory of the mind that upends our understanding of how the brain interacts with the world.

Songwriter and musician Bart Davenport has a deep conversation about the artistic process with Paul Krauss MA LPC in this episode. Throughout the episode, clips of Bart Davenport's songs are played, stories are shared, insights come easy, and the lyrics and tales that form through the music are expounded upon. For the psychology and philosophy fans, there is existentialism aplenty in this conversation from Bart Davenport and Paul Krauss. Whether you are a music lover or not, you are going to love this episode.
Depending on who you ask, Bart Davenport might be many different things. He has performed as a blues singer, a softrock troubadour, and a mod. He is a versatile singer-songwriter who possesses the classic voice of a true crooner. He resides in Los Angeles, where he does music. His work transports us to an imagined past or present that is full of beautiful odes and intriguing characters. It is smooth but weirdly pointed. In spite of taking place in a fantastical setting, Davenport's works frequently reflect contemporary issues. Davenport just recorded twelve new songs in his own studio, leaning back to acoustic guitars and the baroque pop tones of the 1960s. His eighth studio album, titled "Episodes," is expected to be released on Tapete Records in March 2022.

![Dissecting the future based on science and data while leaving projection and fear behind with John Hands [Episode 111]](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/1760630/NEWIntentionalClinicianSIZED_ysz3uj_300x300.jpg)

John Hands stops by the Intentional Clinician with Paul Krauss MA LPC to talk about some of the current large fears that are circulating the information-overload culture as well as mass and social medias. John Hands spent more than 10 years writing his first non-fiction book COSMOSAPIENS: Human Evolution from the Origin of the Universe. Some of John's methods involve summarizing current scientific data from a multitude of sources into digestible chunks, and then sending out chapter drafts to professors and scientists worldwide for critiques for publishing. Having spent a great deal of time writing about the origins of humankind, John Hand's latest book and this podcast concern his analysis and predictions of the future. John's book is entitled: THE FUTURE OF HUMANKIND: Why We Should Be Optimistic. Many of you may be surprised by this title, as was I. However, John's main question he seeks to answer is "Will human beings become extinct?" due to various human concerns including warfare, bioweapons, pandemics, climate change, solar activity, mass geological events, asteroids and comets, artificial intelligence, etc.
The resounding conclusion of John Hand's research is "No. Humans will become extinct from the issues." Of course, John is not a denier of issues. There will be plenty of problems and death due to most of the above issues. In fact, he suggests that millions of people will die and cultures will be disrupted as a result of the changing climate--however, his hard look at the data concludes there are too many factors and models that he believes the earth will not just "burn up" like the runaway hypothesis, but will change dramatically due to various factors and measurements that he lists and outlines in the book. However, John does not believe humans will become extinct due to climate change--though life will be altered for many. This may sound surprising and outright blasphemous to people like myself who are deeply concerned the climate and ecology, but I urge you to listen to this podcast and read John's work as it is deeply researched and fearlessly explored without any agenda, political stripe, or monied interest. These subjects are far too complicated to explore fully in this paragraph or in the podcast, but John has an interesting and balanced take. Check out the book here: THE FUTURE OF HUMANKIND: Why We Should Be Optimistic
John Hands is the author of critically acclaimed nonfiction books and novels, and has been published in 12 countries. He was trained in science, specializing in chemistry, at the University of London where he had been the first undergraduate President of the Union. He co-authored two research studies and published one book in the social sciences. He tutored in physics and in management studies for Britain’s Open University, was visiting lecturer at the University of North London and then RLF Fellow at University College London where he began more than 10 years writing COSMOSAPIENS Human Evolution from the Origin of the Universe. He has also written three novels published in the UK and the USA, one of which was also published in six other countries.

Dr. Brooke Ellison, PhD visits the Intentional Clinician Podcast to talk about her new book Look Both Ways, as well as her life, how 30+ years living with quadriplegia has shaped her views on many subjects, a society of exclusion and working for inclusion, family members and friends who care for those with disabilities, human rights and value, structural functionalist models, the infantilization of people living with disabilities, trauma, the gift of sensitivity, love, and science.
Paul Krauss MA LPC and Dr. Brooke Ellison, PhD have an honest and authentic conversation about how her struggles can inspire others to get involved in making a real difference in the lives of others and the larger community.
At age 11, Brooke Ellison was hit by a car, an accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down and ventilator-dependent. Ten years later, she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in cognitive neuroscience. At 23, she penned Miracles Happen, a memoir that was adapted into a movie, The Brooke Ellison Story, directed by Christopher Reeve. Brooke went on to earn a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a PhD in sociology from Stony Brook University. Today, at 42, she is a tenured professor at Stony Brook.
In her newest memoir-cum-sociological-analysis, Look Both Ways, Brooke returns to the story of her remarkable life, centering herself in a broader conversation about personal struggle, public policy, and what it means to be human. She reflects upon 31 years as a woman with ventilator-dependent quadriplegia. She writes frankly about her day-to-day frustrations but also lyrically about her belief that people possess the strength and grit to “fight back when we feel all is lost.”

![No matter your age, you can begin Dementia Prevention now! w/Dr. Emily Clionsky, MD and Mitchell Clionsky, PhD [Episode 106]](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/1760630/NEWIntentionalClinicianSIZED_ysz3uj_300x300.jpg)

No gimmicks. No fad diets. No strange contraptions. No heavily marketed "super snacks." No chronic sick care. Paul Krauss MA LPC discusses the medical facts of dementia and Alzheimer's disease with authorities Dr. Emily Clionsky and Dr. Mitchell Clionsky. If you are interested in the practical prevention that you can begin implementing now--or are curious for a family member, then this is the podcast for you.
Two experts in brain preservation, Emily Clionsky MD and Mitchell Clionsky PhD will show you how to stack the dementia deck in your favor by reading and following the prescription in Dementia Prevention: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain, (John Hopkins University Press; April 4, 2023).
The Clionskys are a physician (MD) and a neuropsychologist (PhD) who have published research in dementia, developed an accurate dementia test for doctors, and personally treated more than 10,000 patients who have dementia or its preceding condition, Mild Cognitive Impairment. Moreover, they understand the disease personally, having cared for loved ones with dementia in their immediate families. Their goal in this book is to expand their reach, to move from what they now do in their office consultation rooms to the much larger audience of readers who want to use medical science and behavior change to maintain their brains.
In Dementia Prevention, they take you on a guided tour through dementia types, teach you the history of these neurological diseases, and discuss the more than 15 different factors known to affect your risk. They build a visual model of dementia risk, chapter by chapter, pulling all of this information together in a clear picture of how these various pieces interact. When you fill out your individual “Dementia Risk Checklist” that is included in the book (and available online through www.braindoc.com) you will create your own picture of your strengths and your areas needing improvement.
EMILY CLIONSKY, MD, completed residencies in internal medicine and in psychiatry, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. MITCHELL CLIONSKY, PhD, is a board-certified neuropsychologist who specializes in evaluating and treating patients with cognitive impairment, dementia, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury. A husband-and-wife team, they have a combined 70 years of professional and clinical experience in medicine and neuropsychology and have treated more than 10,000 patients. They partner at a private practice, Clionsky Neuro Systems, Inc., based in Springfield, Massachusetts. They are experienced public speakers and workshop presenters for general and professional audiences.

In this podcast, Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews Erin Craig LLMSW as they dive into “Dancing Mindfulness”—a unique way to express feelings through movement, facilitate healing traumas, and work toward regulating your nervous system. Dancing Mindfulness is an integrative health technique which is facilitated by licensed therapists to help people who are seeking alternative approaches and deeper healing. Along with movement, Dancing Mindfulness brings in many elements of education such as trauma-informed science, polyvagal theory, and mindfulness based cognitive therapy, all while encouraging self-expression and reflection. Erin currently co-facilitates the group with Sarah Denick, LMSW at Health for Life Counseling in Grand Rapids, MI. We also learn about Erin Craig LLMSW and how she ventured into more somatic therapeutic exercises.
“I truly believe that movement is our first language… [this technique] can move past cultural barriers and reach entire communities.” -Erin Craig, LLMSW
• Dancing Mindfulness which was developed by Dr. Jamie Marich out of her own healing journey and is an approach to addressing symptoms and feelings in our lives that doesn’t rely on talking.
"Each session of Dancing Mindfulness will begin with education or information about the topic for the day (a mindfulness concept, trauma and the body, etc.), which will then be followed by freestyle dance paired with a theme and music. We will then end each session with a relaxation practice. There is no dance experience required, all skill levels are welcome!
"
Erin Craig LLMSW been a therapist in the Grand Rapids, MI area for over five years. She works with clients individually and runs Dancing Mindfulness groups.

Kathleen McLaughlin and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss the physical, psychological, and economic costs of selling one's plasma in the USA, as well as how the blood industry's current business model impacts the greater health of our society. Kathleen shares the knowledge she has gained through her own personal experience as a recipient of plasma-based medications, and as a journalist who has interviewed people who supplement their income by selling their plasma, and investigated the business model both locally and internationally. While one may initially believe this topic to be unrelated to psychology and philosophy, this podcast discusses the intersections between the the health impacts, the psychological outcomes, and the entire notion of what type of country/world we want to live in--and how all of this can be shaped by Blood Money.
Kathleen McLaughlin is an award-winning journalist who reports and writes about the consequences of economic inequality around the world. A frequent contributor to The Washington Post and The Guardian, McLaughlin’s reporting has also appeared in The New York Times, BuzzFeed, The Atlantic, The Economist, NPR, and more. She is a former Knight Science Journalism fellow at MIT and has won multiple awards for her reporting on labor in China. Blood Money is her first book.
